The Self-Care Trends Graveyard

So many of us have tried things to handle our stress, worry, anxiety… or whatever we are working on.

I like to call it the self-care graveyard... Where we try something for a while, then move on to something else. So whether it’s an app to help you feel calmer, the newest podcast to listen to on your way to work, or the latest gadget, workshop, training, or product, our house, and phone are filled with them all! Not to single me out, but…

These things are supposed to help us “care for ourselves better,” but the reality is that it creates more worry and stress because we are constantly hoping this is “THE ONE,” but in the end, we feel let down.

So here are my top ten lists of self-care disappointments (or crash and burns) I have heard from clients.

Do these sound familiar?

  1. “I tried that mindfulness thing but it didn’t work.”

  2. “‘Mediation’? Isn’t that for those hippies or those artsy people? Definitely not for me! It was such a waste of time!”

  3. “EFT Tapping… no thanks.”

  4. “What is changing my diet going to do?”

  5. “I don’t like to exercise.”

  6. ”Counseling isn’t for me.”

  7. “I’ve attended a training/workshop with [insert guru here], and it didn’t help!”

  8. “I am listening to a podcast/ reading a blog by [insert expert here] but still don’t see any difference in my life.”

  9. “I don’t have time to go to the spa and have ‘me time!’”

  10. “Being still isn’t for me; I need to stay active and get stuff done!”

Self-care has so many aspects that it is hard to find success. It seems like we are either doing “all the things” needed at one time, which is overwhelming and leads to quitting, or we start with one thing, forget or procrastinate, which eventually leads to a loss of motivation altogether.

Sound familiar?

I have noticed that one of the main reasons we don’t focus on our self-care is that we feel like self + care = selfish. Women especially tend to be nurturers and put others first before themselves.

We must remember that we need to care for ourselves in order to care for those around us effectively. Self-care is anything but selfish! It is NECESSARY!

Create a routine that works FOR YOU!

The next problem we face is that when we convince ourselves to focus on self-care, we get into that cycle of trying some wellness trend, but it doesn’t lead to a routine, and, in the end, we feel like failures.

Between content creators on social media making wellness “look easy” or just simply shoving something they are promoting through our screen, we start to feel like we disappointed

Think about the last time you tried to break a habit, try a trending diet, or achieve a goal. Did you buy a subscription, lots of products, or even download an app to track yourself?

Self-care has become an industry all its own. But unfortunately, we try to focus on our self-care so much that the process of “fixing ourselves” makes us more stressed!

How messed up is that?

Work-life balance and self-care have become the big terms right now that everyone seems to be focused on and, in some instances, make competitions out of the process.

If you have a smartwatch, app, or checklist that you need to follow for your self-care, it can make you feel like you are working when instead, you should be feeling relaxed.

So what is the solution?

I wish I could give you a simple answer.

In the end, everyone is so different that there is no one-size-fits-all answer for me to give you.

I can tell you that it starts with what truly brings you joy and cutting yourself some slack if your day doesn’t go according to plan. Don’t let your self-care become another job or task you need to complete.

If any of this sounds like you, I encourage you to find a system custom designed for you, your life, and how live.

And yes I do offer a system that guides you to your customized solution.
